for the birds

i told you all that i am hiring some farmers (sweet pea and beans) to tend my yard and gardens this year. so the boys showed up bright and early and i gave them their chores to do. beans fed the birds and filled the bird baths with water. sweet pea gathered big, fat pine cones from the yard. and i cleaned up after the dog. man i cannot wait for them to be responsible for that job! after our chores were done, we worked on a simple little gift for the critters.

PINE CONE BIRD FEEDERS
1) round up the kiddos and send them on a search for pine cones
2) prepare separate bowls of birdseed and peanut butter (creamy)
3) tie a long piece of twine around a sturdy part of the pinecone (i made mine extra tight right in the middle to give the squirrels a hard time)
4) have the kiddos spread peanut butter around the outside of the pine cone (my kids did so sparingly because they ate the rest of the peanut butter...it was snack time!)
5) roll the pine cone in bird seed
6) hang from a tree branch

note: i didn't see one bird eat from our feeders. however, all of the pine cones disappeared from their tree limbs. i'm pretty sure the squirrels are full!
