a crack in my shell

sweet pea often says to me, "you're my friend, mom." and the other night we had a conversation that started out that exact way....
sp: you're my friend mom.
me: you're my friend. i love you.
sp: you're a good mom. but sometimes being a mom just isn't enough. sometimes you have to do more.
me: mouth gaping....total silence....then i realized that the words were too well rehearsed for my four year old. exhale....
me: where did you hear that?
sp: elastigirl told mr. incredible that sometimes being incredible just wasn't enough, that he had to do more.

a few thoughts on this - first and foremost...i need to stop relying on disney movies to buy me time while i get ready in the morning.
*
second, amazing that my son was able to change the context of something he heard in a movie and apply it to real life.
*
third, ugh! he's so right even if he doesn't understand the meaning of his words. i love the lesson. sometimes it's not enough just to be the mom...i have to do more to make things work. i have to participate even when i'm tired. i have to prevent myself from being overwhelmed by the responsibility. his words were a really good reminder to me to always try hard in the ways that matter, and to stop putting energy into things that don't. a reminder that perfection is not the goal, it's the process and the learning that is important when little eyes are watching my examples every day.

hope everyone had a wonderful easter!

  1. nothing like a smack in the face via disney... thanks for the reminder that there is always a little more room for improvement and lots more time to slow down for the important things. i forget all to much that today is fleeting...

  2. Arielle now tells me to "Put a pin in it" and she even makes the motion. It's from the movie Bolt. She tells me this when she doesn't want to hear what I am saying or she wants me to stop talking. These kids....they are too smart for their own good (and ours)!

Yes, let's get together anytime! Museums are great...but anywhere works for us.
