mommy - the spider killer

in my own super hero scenario, i would overcome my unnatural fear of spiders and rid the world of their terror one by one.  if you were spider man, say, you might think of me as a villain.  alas, i am a mom.  so i am occasionally forced to collect them.  and put them into little jars. and i know i'm not too awful when i see grimy boy fingers drop a spider into the jar.  because...i feel a bit of sympathy to see those same fingers drop a grasshopper in next.  that is not natural if you ask me.  that's like a bug ultimate fighting challenge.  i fear for them both.  i feel queasy in my stomach a bit, having to look at them at all.  it's not villainous if a smallish boy sets out to understand the ways of the natural world, right?  that bugs don't belong in jars any more than spiders and grasshoppers need to coexist.  and then relief consumes me when i realize i have two more sets of boy hands around the house to rid my world of spiders.  amen.

  1. this weekend a friend of ours was staying out at the farm and watched a praying mantis take on a grasshopper. the pm first pinned the wings, then took the grasshopper's jumping legs off, and then ate him alive. nice, right?
