someone mentioned the word HOARDING this week. it sticks out in my mind as a catch phrase these days. i think there's a tv show about it. i think my grandparents were such. hoarders. but i'll give them the concession that they lived through wars and the depression. folks of that era have a distinct mentality about usability and usefulness. then there were the 80s where everything became disposable. my mind is caught somewhere in the middle. but i've mentioned that my grandparents NEVER THREW ANYTHING AWAY. so very shortly here, when i have no more excuses to make, i will endeavor to clean up and out the things that have accumulated since the beginning of our home. every telephone, every camera, every STAMP, suitcase, mason jar, lunch box, hard hat and tool they saved for the 80 years they were on this earth. and, honestly, as i peruse the aisles of antique stores i say over and over again, "i have that." i might start my own shop. or give things away on the blog. or sell them on etsy and ebay. or, i might store them...just like my dad did. and tell my kids, "someday this will all be yours (chuckle chuckle)."
definitely de-junk... but make a funky scrapbook out of the really interesting things you find. today someone told me that she found her grandparent's home-ledger-budget-thing from the depression, and on the bottom of one page it said: ask cliff what he did with the missing 2 cents
ReplyDeletefunny stuff for those of us who see little value in two pennies...
just a thought! oxo
i know all about folks of the depression. i once was helping my dear old g-ma betty clean out her basement. she cried as i removed a broken ceiling fan telling me how hard she worked to buy it and how some of the parts might be useful and how wasteful my generation was..... i am sure you will find some great things. have fun!
ReplyDeleteMy mom got that gene...and she will not throw out a cool whip tub.
